Working in healthcare can entail intense emotional demands that increases susceptibility to occupational risk factors. Psychosocial risk assessment can contribute to promoting awareness of the effects of work on positive mental health. To explore and analyse the influence of psychosocial work factors on positive mental health among psychologists. A cross-sectional study of 339 psychologists was conducted. Two instruments were used for data collection: the Mental Health Continuum—Short Form (MHC-SF) to assess well-being and the Health and Work Survey (INSAT) to assess psychosocial work factors. This study identified psychosocial work factors that affect psychologists’ positive mental health, namely, emotional well-being was affected by ‘Need help from colleagues’ (β = −1.091), ‘Have no one I can trust’ (β = −1.253) and ‘Complex work’ (β = 0.751); psychological well-being was affected by ‘Intense work pace’ (β = 1.151), ‘Not able to participate in decisions’ (β = −3.695) and ‘Complex work’ (β = 1.520); and social well-being was affected by ‘Always changing roles and tasks’ (β = −1.810) and ‘Not able to participate in decisions’ (β = −2.470). Psychosocial work factors such as work organization, work relationships and emotional demands influence psychologists’ positive mental health. Social support at the workplace and having challenging and autonomous work can promote mental health. It is important to develop better organizational practices to promote mental health and well-being among these professionals.

Histone methylation/demethylation plays an important modulatory role in chromatin restructuring, RNA transcription and is essential for controlling a plethora of biological processes. Due to many human diseases have been related to histone methylation/demethylation, several compounds such as 3-deazaneplanocin A (DZNep) or 3-((6-(4,5-Dihydro-1H-benzo[d]azepin-3(2H)-yl)-2-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidin-4-yl)amino)propanoic acid; N-[2-(2-pyridinyl)-6-(1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-3H-3-benzazepin-3-yl)-4-pyrimidinyl]-β-Alanine (GSK-J1), have been designed to inhibit histone methylase or suppress histone demethylase, respectively. In the present study, we investigated the effects on the sleep-wake cycle and sleep-related neurochemical levels after systemic injections of DZNep or GSK-J1 given during the light or dark phase in rats. DZNep dose-dependently (0.1, 1.0, or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) prolonged wakefulness (W) duration while decreased slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) time spent during the lights-on period with no changes observed in dark phase. In opposite direction, GSK-J1 (0.1, 1.0, or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) injected at the beginning of the lights-on period induced no statistical changes in W, SWS, or REMS whereas if administered at darkness, we found a diminution in W and an enhancement in SWS and REMS. Finally, brain microdialysis experiments in freely moving animals were used to evaluate the effects of DZNep or GSK-J1 treatments on contents of sleep-related neurochemicals. The results showed that DZNep boosted extracellular levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, serotonin, adenosine, and acetylcholine if injected at the beginning of the lights-on period whereas GSK-J1 exerted similar outcomes but when administered at darkness. In summary, DZNep and GSK-J1 may control the sleep-wake cycle and sleep-related neurochemicals through histone methylation/demethylation activity.

Patient-centered approach is gaining prominence in several areas of Medicine and is increasingly considered as an important paradigm for the provision of quality healthcare. The communication established between health professionals and patients in hospitals became increasingly seen as fundamental and to be valued, namely in areas such as Radiology (RD) or Nuclear Medicine (NM). Patient education is therefore a common practice in the NM and RD departments, mainly due to the lack of knowledge about this kind of procedures, which is believed to be a reality, based on our empirical evidence and on data not yet published. The aim of this study is to characterize current practices used in patient education in Portuguese Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Radiology.

Verificou-se que a redução do conforto com a proximidade e da confiança nos outros está associada a uma diminuição da recordação espacial, o que pode pressupor modificações do funcionamento do hipocampo.

Foi publicado na revista “Water” um artigo da autoria do Prof. Edgar Pinto (docente na ATC de Saúde Ambiental), em colaboração com investigadores de outros centros de investigação e universidades, sobre o potencial dos leitos húmidos construídos (“Constructed wetlands”) para o tratamento de água contaminada com Microcystis aeruginosa e respetiva cianotoxina, microcistina-LR. Resultados promissores foram obtidos neste trabalho, indicando que a presente tecnologia é uma forma eficaz e sustentável de tratar água contaminada com estes poluentes.

O estudo reportado neste artigo examina em que medida a aliança terapêutica em psicoterapia se relaciona com processos psicológicos do terapeuta - em particular, com a elaboração da experiência contratransferencial, que designa o modo como o terapeuta trata as suas experiências em sessão. Os resultados sugerem que estes processos psicológicos do terapeuta estão envolvidos em aspectos importantes da relação terapêutica, nomeadamente junto de pacientes com maiores dificuldades de personalidade. Conclui-se que, na sua formação e na prática clínica, os psicoterapeutas devem ser ajudados a perceber como utilizar aquilo que experienciam em sessão para potenciar o processo terapêutico.

Após uma sessão experimental deste programa, constatou-se que a maior parte dos participantes consideraram este modelo de intervenção facilmente compreensível e com potenciais benefícios para os seus sintomas.

Artigo de revisão com foco no uso de cianobactérias em produtos direcionados para a proteção da pele. A revisão permitiu rever o estado da arte relacionado com a produção de compostos com função hidratante, antioxidante, anti-inflamatória, despigmentante e compostos capazes de filtrar a radiação UV por cianobactérias, apresentando e enfatizando de forma critica as vantagens do uso destes organismos na cosmética natural.

Neste trabalho é descrita a síntese do composto Hierridina B e C, isolados de uma cianobactéria marinha e a avaliação do seu potencial anticancerígeno e antimalárico. Ambos os compostos revelaram não ter efeito citotóxico em linhagens celulares cancerígenas. Como antimaláricos o composto Hierridina C apresentou atividade tendo sido criada uma patente.

Ana Santos, docente da ATC de Ortóptica, participou num estudo “Characterisation of Initial Stages of Diabetic Macular Edema”, o qual sugere que o Edema Macular Diabético, principal causa de perda de visão na diabetes, poderá ter origem no dano citotóxico das células de Muller e outras células neuronais. No entanto, à medida que a doença progride, parece existir uma predominância da resposta vascular, com rutura da barreira hemato-retiniana e acumulação de fluido extracelular.

Ana Santos, docente da ATC de Ortóptica, estudou a neovascularização coroideia relacionada com a DMI, uma das principais causas de cegueira na idade adulta. Concluiu que o OCT-Leakage, técnica não invasiva de imagiologia da retina, consegue identificar e localizar a acumulação anormal de fluido presente nesta doença e sua evolução após o tratamento. Esta técnica mostrou uma boa correlação com o resultado funcional após tratamento, podendo ser utilizada como um marcador precoce da reativação da doença.

Ana Santos, docente da ATC de Ortóptica, realizou um estudo com o OCT-Leakage no Edema Macular Diabético. O tratamento do Edema Macular Diabético nem sempre é seguido pela recuperação da função visual. A identificação de fatores preditores para os resultados da terapia com anti-VEGF é necessária para uma melhor gestão do tratamento desta condição. O OCT-Leakage parece ser um biomarcador robusto na predição da resposta ao tratamento do Edema Macular Diabético.

Ana Santos, docente da ATC de Ortóptica, participou num estudo que mostra que na prática clínica, a maioria dos olhos que apresentam EMD e uma boa visão, mantêm a visão nos 12 meses seguintes, independentemente de serem tratados ou não. São assim realizados muitos tratamentos anti-VEGF para se obterem ganhos não relevantes clinicamente. Este trabalho apoia que se faça apenas uma observação cuidadosa destes doentes, não tratando até haver, pelo menos, um decréscimo de 1 linha na visão.

Este estudo, em que participou Ana Santos, docente da ATC de Ortóptica, mostrou que a maioria dos olhos com EMD que não responderam ao tratamento anti-VEGF após a dose de carga, continuaram não respondedores após 12 meses (72%) se em monoterapia com o mesmo tratamento. Os olhos que alteraram a terapia mais cedo para o implante de dexametasona tiveram melhores resultados funcionais após 12 meses e foram capazes de manter esses resultados durante os 24 meses do estudo.

To review the methods used to analyze the kinematics of upper limbs (ULs) of healthy and poststroke adults, namely the motion capture systems and kinematic metrics. A database of articles published in the last decade was compiled using the following search terms combinations: (“upper extremity” OR “upper limb” OR arm) AND (kinematic OR motion OR movement) AND (analysis OR assessment OR measurement). The articles included in this review: (1) had the purpose to analyze objectively three-dimension kinematics of ULs, (2) studied functional movements or activities of daily living involving ULs, and (3) studied healthy and/or poststroke adults. Fourteen articles were included (four studied a healthy sample, three analyzed poststroke patients, and seven examined both poststroke and healthy participants). Most articles used optoelectronic systems with markers; however, the presentation of laboratory and task-specific errors is missing. Markerless systems, used in some studies, seem to be promising alternatives for implementation of kinematic analysis in hospitals and clinics, but the literature proving their validity is scarce. Most articles analyzed “joint kinematics” and “end-point kinematics,” mainly related with reaching. The different stroke locations of the samples were not considered in their analysis and only three articles described their psychometric properties. Future research should validate portable motion capture systems, document their specific error at the acquisition place and for the studied task, include grasping and manipulation analysis, and describe psychometric properties.

Prostate cancer (PCa) varies clinically from very indolent, not requiring therapeutic intervention, to highly aggressive, entailing radical treatment. Currently, stratification of PCa aggressiveness is mostly based on Gleason score, serum PSA and TNM stage, but outcome prediction in an individual basis is suboptimal. Thus, perfecting pre-therapeutic discrimination between indolent and aggressive PCa, avoiding overtreatment is a major challenge. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) allows epithelial cells to acquire mesenchymal properties, constituting a critical step in tumor invasion and metastization. Thus, we hypothesized that EMT-related markers might allow for improved assessment of PCa aggressiveness. Using RealTime ready Custom Panel 384 assay, 93 EMT-related genes were assessed in normal prostate tissues (NPT, n=5), stage pT2a+b-PCa (n=5) and stage pT3b-PCa (n=5), from which CAMK2N1, CD44, KRT14, TGFβ3 and WNT5A genes emerged as the most significantly altered. Expression levels were then evaluated in a larger series (16 NPT and 94 PCa) of frozen tissues using quantitative RT-PCR. Globally, CAMK2N1, CD44 and WNT5A displayed higher expression levels at higher stages and less differentiated PCa. CAMK2N1 and WNT5A immunoexpression analysis disclosed significantly lower expression in NPT and increasing proportion of high-expression cases from pT2a+b to pT3b and metastatic PCa. Furthermore, higher CAMK2N1 and WNT5A transcript levels associated with shorter disease-free and disease-specific survival. In multivariable analysis, a trend for WNT5A expression levels to independently predict DFS was disclosed (p=0.056). Globally, our findings suggest an association between PCa aggressiveness and increased expression of CAMK2N1 and WNT5A, reflecting the acquisition of effective EMT characteristics by PCa cells.

The exposure of both crop fields and humans to antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animal excreta is an emergent concern of the One Health initiative. This study assessed the contamination of livestock manure from poultry, pig, dairy farms and slaughterhouses in Portugal with resistance determinants. The resistance profiles of 331 Enterobacteriaceae isolates to eight β-lactam (amoxicillin, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, cefpirome, aztreonam, ceftazidime, imipenem and meropenem) and to five non-β-lactam antibiotics (tetracycline (TET), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT), ciprofloxacin (CIP), chloramphenicol (CHL) and gentamicin) was investigated. Forty-nine integron and non-β-lactam resistance genes were also screened for. Rates of resistance to the 13 antibiotics ranged from 80.8% to 0.6%. Multidrug resistance (MDR) rates were highest in pig farm samples (79%). Thirty different integron and resistance genes were identified. These were mainly associated with resistance to CHL (catI and catII), CIP (mainly, qnrS, qnrB and oqx), TET (mainly tet(A) and tet(M)) and SXT (mostly dfrIa group and sul3). In MDR isolates, integron presence and non-β-lactam resistance to TET, SXT and CHL were positively correlated. Overall, a high prevalence of MDR Enterobacteriaceae was found in livestock manure. The high gene diversity for antibiotic resistance identified in this study highlights the risk of MDR spread within the environment through manure use.

We report on an architecture of a multi-purpose trigger system based on inexpensive and off-the-shelf modules, with logic implemented in three levels, that can be used in a variety of small/medium systems just by writing a few registers using the accompanying software. The developed trigger algorithms are described in Very High Speed Integrated Circuits (VHSIC) Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and implemented using a Xilinx XC6LX45-2 FPGA. In its present implementation, for the sake of simplicity, communication with the external world is done using the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), which allows easy connection to a Raspberry Pi2 running Linux. The Raspberry software was written in C++ and enables configuring and checking of the underlying FPGA and retrieving the monitoring data. The system has been used, with success, in several applications, from lab setup to industrial and pre-clinical environments showing its versatility and robustness.

People with severe mental illness (SMI), schizophrenia in particular, show considerable functional impairment in emotional recognition and social perception, which negatively affects interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Owing to its ecological validity, virtual reality (VR) has been observed to improve both assessment and training of emotional recognition skills of people with SMI. This article includes two studies: (a) a descriptive study on the Virtual Reality program for Facial Emotion Recognition (VR-FER) and (b) an empirical study that presents the results of the application of the VR-FER’s first module. For the second study, data were collected using two samples: a group of 12 people with schizophrenia and a reference group of 12 people who were mentally healthy. Data analysis comprised descriptive (mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Mann–Whitney U test). Results showed that the first group presented a lower number of correct answers and a higher number of incorrect answers compared with the second group regarding facial emotion recognition (FER), thereby confirming the need to develop strategies to improve emotional recognition and social perception in people with schizophrenia. VR-FER is regarded a strategic training program for FER, using latest technology and following rehabilitation guidelines for SMI.
