Epidemiology and Pharmacoepidemiology are fundamental tools that can be used by all health professionals, particularly pharmacy professionals, as they are ultimately responsible for providing effective and safe medicines to populations, as well as for promoting its proper use. It is in this context that higher education institutions, companies, professional organizations and all those responsible for activity in the field of pharmacy, have been demonstrating greater awareness of the training of their human resources in these scientific areas. In short, we can understand epidemiology as the study of the distribution of diseases and their determinants. Thus, epidemiology is an area of ??science that deals with the various genetic, social or environmental factors and conditions resulting from microbiological, toxic, traumatic exposure, which determine the occurrence and distribution of health, disease, disability and death among groups of individuals. Pharmacoepidemiology, on the other hand, can be understood as the application of the epidemiological method and reasoning to the study of effects ? beneficial and adverse ? and the use of medicines in human populations. This training will be articulated with the Masters in Pharmacy, a specialization area in pharmacotherapy and pharmacoepidemiology, which is in operation at the Escola Superior de Saúde do Politécnico do Porto, with the possibility of crediting the Curricular Units attended in this postgraduate course, in that master.
