According to Decree-Law no. of patients and for consumption under medical supervision, intended for the exclusive or partial feeding of patients with limited, reduced or altered capacity to ingest, digest, absorb, metabolize or excrete common foodstuffs or some of the nutrients contained therein or their metabolites, or whose state of health determines particular nutritional needs other than foodstuffs intended for a particular diet or a combination of both.” In view of the constant addition of new products recommended by pharmacy professionals in the context of community pharmacy (particularly oral nutritional supplements) and dispensed by pharmacy professionals upon prescription in hospitals (oral nutritional supplements and enteral diets), an update regarding products available – namely in terms of composition and indications.
Regarding infant formulas and follow-on formulas, as recognized by Commission Regulation 2016/127 of 25 September 2015 “(…) are sophisticated products, specially formulated for a group of vulnerable consumers”. It is of paramount importance to recognize that these products have specificities in terms of composition that justify their recommendation in particular individuals. The correct interpretation of the nutrition declaration for infant formulas and follow-on formulas “is essential in order to ensure their proper use, both for parents and caregivers and for health professionals who recommend their consumption”.
Bearing in mind the role played by pharmacy professionals in the context of preparing nutritional bags for parenteral administration, it is also imperative to deepen and update knowledge in this area, giving priority to technical-scientific concepts and practices that provide skills in terms of pharmacotechnology.
The Postgraduate Course in the Field of Pharmacy can be achieved after completing different Curricular Units (which integrate modules) to which they correspond to credit units, which aim to obtain specific skills in the area of ??nutrition. The Pedagogical Plan is developed in theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical classes.
