The postgraduate in health impact assessment (ais) is a pioneer in the approach of systematic and prospective assessment of the potential impacts of a policy, plan, program or project on human and environmental health, allowing the mitigation and equitable distribution of possible adverses effects and the maximization of beneficial effects. AIS also assumes growing importance in the current context of climate change, which is causing a series of adverse effects on public health, including the increase of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, the proliferation of vector-borne diseases and the improvation of living conditions due to extreme weather events, such as heat waves, floods and drought. Thus, ais allows you to anticipate risks, inform public policies and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. By integrating health into environmental assessments, ais ensure that health impacts are considered in decisions on development, urban design and environmental management, promoting the resilience of communities. Additionally, the prevention of health problems and the promotion of healthy environments also allows to reduce costs for the healthcare system, reducing the need for medical treatment and hospitalization.

The objective of this postgraduate is to train professionals from different training areas to proefficiently use a combination of procedures, methods and tools developed fully by the world health organization (who) for identification, analysis, evaluation and quantification of risks cos for human health associated with environmental policies, programs, plans or projects. It also aim to enable the prevention and management of these risks through the one health approach, promoting a healthier and sustainable environment.

In this sequence, this postgraduate degree is aligned with the institutional mission of ess, which focuses on the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture and knowledge in areas directly or indirectly related to health, both national and international.

The predominant area of training, according to CNAEF, is public health (853), with environmental protection (850) as a secondary area.
