SPEECH THERAPY IS AN AUTONOMOUS PROFESSION, WHICH ADDRESS DISORDERS OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION, SWALLOWING AND ASSOCIATED FUNCTIONS. SPEECH THERAPISTS CAN JOIN EDUCATIONAL TEAMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE, REHABILITATION TEAMS FOR CHILDREN AND/OR ADULTS, AND VARIOUS OTHER WORK SETTINGS, ENCOUNTERING COMPLEX CHALLENGES THROUGHOUT THEIR ENTIRE CAREER. THE MASTERS IN SPEECH THERAPY SEEKS TO RESPOND TO THE DESIRE FOR MORE SOLID AND REFLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE, MANIFESTED BY SPEECH THERAPISTS MOTIVATED FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC PROGRESSION. THE MASTERS DEGREE HAS EXISTED AT ESS-P.PORTO SINCE 2017 AND WAS REVISED IN 2024/25 TO RESPOND TO NEW PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGES AND ADOPT A PEDAGOGICAL MODEL IN B-LEARNING, MORE FLEXIBLE AND ADJUSTED TO THE NEEDS OF WORKER-STUDENTS. IT HAS A 2-YEAR DURATION, THE FIRST OF WHICH IS DEDICATED TO THE CURRICULAR COMPONENT AND THE SECOND TO APPLIED RESEARCH. IN THIS STUDY PLAN THERE IS A CLEAR INVESTMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF REFLECTIVE AND EVIDENCE-CENTERED PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES, AS WELL AS FAMILY-CENTERED PRACTICES AND COLLABORATIVE APPROACHES, REINFORCENING THE PARADIGMS DEFENDED BY THE WHO AND SCIENTIFIC AND PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS AIS OF THE AREA AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. INNOVATIVE THEMES ARE ALSO PRESENT SUCH AS PROJECT MANAGEMENT, MULTIMEDIA ACTIVITIES AND TELEHEALTH IN SPEECH THERAPY. THIS MASTER'S DEGREE IS FURTHER CHARACTERIZED BY A STRONG VERSATILE COMPONENT (20 ECTS), THEREFORE THE 3 OPTIONAL SPECIALTY DISCIPLINES ARE DETERMINED ANNUALLY, ACCORDING TO THE PROFILE AND CHOICES OF EACH CLASS. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO SELECT CURRICULAR UNIT OF THEIR INTEREST FROM OTHER POSTGRADUATE COURSES EXISTING AT ESS. IN THE 2ND YEAR (60 ECTS) THE STUDENT DEDICATES THEMSELVES ENTIRELY TO DEVELOPING AND PRESENTING THEIR DISSERTATION. STUDENTS WHO WANT TO START OR REORIENT THEIR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE CAN ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE INTERNSHIP OR PROJECT REPORT MODES. DURING THE YEAR, STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM GUIDANCE, SUPPORT CLASSES AND PERIODIC PRESENTATIONS OF THE RESEARCH COURSE CARRIED OUT. THE RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE LINES OF RESEARCH DEFINED BY ESS, PROMOTING INTEGRATION IN ASSOCIATED RESEARCH CENTERS AND/OR INTERACTION WITH FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER RESEARCH GROUPS. INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY IS, WHENEVER POSSIBLE, ENCOURAGED IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE STUDENT'S EXPERIENCES AND DIVERSIFY THEIR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS PROFILE.

In accordance with Article 17 of Decree-Law 115/2013 of August 7, the following may apply for access to the Master's Degree in Speech Therapy: a) Holders of a degree in Speech Therapy or legal equivalent; b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in the area of Speech Therapy awarded following a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process; c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree in the area of Speech Therapy that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the degree by the Technical-Scientific Council of ESS.IPP; d) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the Technical-Scientific Council of ESS.IPP.
