The Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (BLS) confers qualification to the autonomous practice of the professions Technic of Clinical Analysis and Public Health and Technic of Pathology, Cytology and Thanatology, as established in State Gazette, no. 138, July 21st (Order no. 9409/2014). Therefore, the graduate in BLS performs most of his duties in laboratorial contexts, contributing to the prevention, screening, diagnosis and prognosis of the disease, as well as to the selection of appropriate therapies, assessment of the treatment?s efficacy, monitoring and control of therapies/drugs and analysis of water and foods.

The main areas of intervention of this practitioner are Molecular Biology, Cytopathology, Genetics, Clinical Haematology, Histopathology, Immunohematology, Immunology, Microscopy, Microbiology, Immunohistochemistry, Clinical Pathology, Molecular Pathology, Public Health and Thanatology.

This professional can work as part of multidisciplinary teams, performing his activities in public or private healthcare institutions such as hospitals, health centres, toxicology / rehabilitation centres, blood banks, cryopreservation companies, histocompatibility and public health laboratories, and forensic medicine institutes. In addition to this, he can also work in animal pathology (veterinary) laboratories, research units, clinical diagnostic companies, marketing (sales representatives), as well as teaching in Higher Education institutions.
